Research Interests

During my PhD in Zurich, I worked with an in vitro virus-cell model. The aim was to hinder the feline leukaemia virus (FeLV) from entering its host cell by adding short synthetic peptides known to have antiviral activity in other viruses (e.g. HIV). These peptides may block the fusion between the viral and the cell membrane, which is a crucial step in the entry mechanism of FeLV. We found a synthetic peptide derived from the transmembrane part of the FeLV envelope glycoprotein with high inhibitory potential.

In my postdoctoral research, I focus on expression of a viral protein, the Influenza Hemagglutinin (HA) fusion peptide, in cell-like compartments (vesicles); expression is done with an E.coli cell-free expression system. The HA fusion peptide induces the fusion of the viral and the cell membrane. The aim is that, upon protein expression, fusion and fission processes are induced in vesicles. This project may become relevant in the construction of an artificial cell, in personalized drug delivery systems, and in customizable bioreactors.
